Can you believe we are on the heels of May??? It’s craziness, right?

With the change in seasons comes a change in what we are crocheting these days. It is no longer cozy hats and over-sized scarves. Instead, it’s time to think outside the box!

I was inspired by an amazing yarn set I purchased from a company I discovered on Etsy. The shop is called Fair Isle Yarn. They have some really great yarn color palates which are absolutely impossible to resist.

Acrylic Craft Medium Yarn, Liberty Craft Color Pack, Yarn Gift Set, Acrylic Yarn, Soft Acrylic Yarn, Knitting And Crochet

I actually purchased three different color combos from them. For today’s project, I used the Liberty Craft color ‘Beach’. As I was dreaming up what to make I was inspired by a book my kiddos were reading. There was a worm in the book and I felt like a worm would be a fun way to keep all of the colors together.

Plus, a huggable crochet worm is perfect for a summer project!

I chose to make over-sized eyes using two felt colors. You can easily put on whatever type of eyes you prefer. I would suggest an eye which would stay on more securely if you’re giving this to a smaller child. Otherwise, with the felt and hot glue, these style of eyes will come right off!

As you can see, William the Worm is large and this is what I love most about him!

He is so squishy and lovable. The kids absolutely adore him! I think William the Worm will be needing some worm friends soon because one worm isn’t enough for seven kids to share!

He is even being assigned a bedtime buddy so everyone gets a turn.

This pattern is so simple! As long as you can complete a HDC (half double crochet) stitch then you can most certainly make William!

TOOLS:

  • fair isle yarn pack of choice
  • size K hook
  • stuffing
  • tapestry needle
  • scissors
  • your choice for eyes

CROCHET TERMS:

  • HDC – half double crochet
  •  hdc2tog – half double crochet two together

The PATTERN:

Start by creating the magic circle.

***Not sure what the magic circle is? Comment down below for me to make a video tutorial!

Inside the circle, place 6 HDC, sl st together to join. ch 1

Rnd 2 – 2 HDC in each stitch all the way around. sl st to join. ch 1

Rnd 3 – * HDC, 2 HDC in next st, repeat from * all the way around. sl st to join. ch 1

Rnd 4 – *HDC, HDC, 2 HDC in next st, repeat from * all the way around. sl st to join. ch 1

Rnd 5 – *HDC, HDC, HDC, 2 HDC in next st, repeat from * all the way around. sl st to join. ch 1

Rnd 6 – *HDC, HDC, HDC, HDC, 2 HDC in next st, repeat from * all the way around. sl st to join. ch 1

Rnd 7 – HDC, HDC, HDC, HDC, HDC, 2 HDC in next st, repeat from * all the way around. sl st to join. ch 1

PLACE A STITCH MARKER HERE AND ADD STUFFING

From here you will create the body of the worm using HDCs all the way around. I simply used all of the cakes within the Fair Isle case. This is the part of the pattern where you can completely customize the length.

For the decreases, you will utilize your stitch marker.

Decrease Round:

  • Place a HDC in the next 6 STS. Then, you will hdc2tog in the next ST. Continue around until you come back to the stitch marker.
  • HDC in the next 5 STS. Then, you will hdc2tog in the next ST. Continue around until you come back to the stitch marker.
  • HDC in the next 4 STS. Then, you will hdc2tog in the next ST. Continue around until you come back to the stitch marker.

You will continue like this until you have closed the worm. You can add in any remaining stuffing to fill up the decrease area. Once it is closed enough, you will leave a long tail. With your tapestry needle, you will secure the opening and then weave in the ends.

ATTACHING EYES

Since I used felt eyes, it didn’t matter when I attached them to the worm. However, if you’re using an eye which will need to be sewn on (like a button) or if you’re using an amigurumi eye. Then you will need to attach them before you add stuffing or close up the worm.

As you can see, this is a super simple pattern and can be worked up in about an hour! It’s perfect for gifts, a new toy or just something to crochet during summertime!
