crochet toy bin

It’s summer time almost and that means everyone is changing up their crochet project game! And a perfect time to make this crochet toy bin!

For our family, we try and do a twice a year purge. We go through EVERYTHING in the house! This includes the insurmountable piles of toys. I am always looking for practical (and stylish) ways to store toys.

My inspiration for this crochet toy bin project came when I realized how many stuffed animals we had. I knew I needed something big enough to house them so I decided on a large toy bin that would also look great sitting in the family room!

This would be perfect for storing throw pillows and guest towels too.

I was asked on Instagram approximately how long this project took me. What’s awesome is, it worked up in about two hours!

HERE IS WHAT I USED:

  • working with two strands at a time, I used six skeins of the blue color (Lion Brand Hometown USA in Montpelier Peacock)
  • size Q hook
  • working with two strands at a time, I used about 1/4th of two skeins in the black color (Lion Brand Hometown USA in Oakland Black)
  • tapestry needle
  • scissors

TECHNIQUES:

  • magic circle
  • HDC (half double crochet)

I was curious about which yarn you had chosen to work with. I love the look and was wondering if there are other colors available for a little girl’s mountain of Barbie dolls!

I used Big Twist yarn from JoAnn’s. It’s their chunky line. If you can’t get your hands on BigTwits, lion brands wool-ease is just about the same thing.

I have a lot of leftover yarns in various colors mostly RH worsted weight 4. I don’t have any bulky 6 weight. Could I crochet this with double yarn worsted weight 4? If so, what hook size would you recommend? I just love your pattern so much I want to make this for my grandson. He is turning 5 soon and he has his own bedroom in our home. Thank you also for this free pattern. I can see making a few of these for my yarn projects as well. Many thanks again!

Hi Elaine! If you’re doubling your size 4 yarn you should still be able to use the size in the pattern. If you work up a few rounds and you feel like it’s too loose. Go ahead and move down one hook size. Thanks so much for stopping by and let me know if you need anymore help! 🙂
