I wanted to keep this American flag crochet blanket pattern simple because I know for many, the tediousness of a pattern can hinder some from starting a project.
Honestly, the most “difficult” part of this pattern is the time it takes to attach the stars. But the stars themselves make up in less than 2 minutes each!
This blanket took me appr. 10 hrs to make. I completed it over the course of 2 days. The customer who put in the order wanted it to lay a certain way as well as cover their body completely. I designed it so as to be big enough to throw over a sofa and cover an average size adult.
I used about 7.5 skeins of yarn 3 Red, 3 White, and 1.5 Blue.
The pattern has been adjusted to represent the correct number of stripes like that of the real flag.
Gauge: 16 sts X 8 rows = 4 square inches
DIMENSIONS: 43.25in. long x 39in. Wide
The PATTERN for the American Flag Crochet Blanket:
Starting with red CH 173
Row 1: DC in the BACK LOOP of the 3rd CH from the hook. Do this all the way across, CH 2 and Turn
Row 2: DC in the BACK LOOP all the way across, CH 2 and Turn
Row 3 – 6: repeat Row 2
Row 7 – 12: (with white yarn) repeat Row 2
Row 13 – 18: (with red yarn) repeat Row 2
Row 19 – 24: (with white yarn) repeat Row 2
Row 25 – 30: (with red yarn) repeat Row 2
Row 31 – 36: (with white yarn) repeat Row 2
Row 37: On this row, we will bring in the blue yarn for the star area of the flag. Starting row 37 with the RED yarn you will DC in the BACK LOOPS for 88 sts, then you will bring in the BLUE yarn (dropping the red yarn) and continuing with DCs in the BACK LOOPS for the remaining 85 stitches, CH 2, Turn.
***It’s important to realize you are NOT carrying along the yarn when you go from the stripe to the solid blue area. You are simply DROPPING the working color and picking up the new working color strand.
You don’t want to be adding a new piece every time you go from a stripe to the blue because this will weaken this area of the blanket. Picking up and dropping the yarn was the easiest and strongest way I felt I could add on the blue area. As well as keeping the blanket looking fluid in the stitch design.
Row 38: (with blue yarn) DC in the BACK LOOPS for 85 sts, then you will bring in the RED yarn (dropping the blue yarn) and continuing with DCs in the BACK LOOPS for the remaining 88 sts, CH 2, Turn.
Row 39 – 42: repeat Row 37 and 38
Row 43: (with white yarn) DC in the BACK LOOPS for 88 sts, then you will bring in the BLUE yarn (dropping the white yarn) and continuing with DCs in the BACK LOOPS for the remaining 85 stitches, CH 2, Turn.
Row 44: (with blue yarn) DC in the BACK LOOPS for 85 sts, then you will bring in the WHITE yarn (dropping the blue yarn) and continuing with DCs in the BACK LOOPS for the remaining 88 sts, CH 2, Turn.
Row 45 – 48: repeat Row 43 and 44
Row 49 – 54: repeat Row 37 and 38
Row 55 – 60: repeat Row 43 and 44
Row 61 – 66: repeat Row 37 and 38
Row 67 – 72: repeat Row 43 and 44
Row 73 – 78: repeat Row 37 and 38
the STAR Pattern for the American Flag Crochet Blanket:
***Use 5.5 mm Hook
Using the Magic Circle Method SC 15 inside the circle, SL ST to first SC then CH 5
Working back down the CH 5 you will SL ST in 2nd CH from hook, SC in next CH, HDC in next CH, DC in next CH, skip next 2 DC, SL ST in next DC ST. ***this will be one of five points on the star*** repeat this pattern beginning each time at the CH 5 point.
After the last SL ST into the SC ST you will tie off the yarn.
Repeat this process until you have a total of 50 stars.
Attaching the Stars to the American Flag Crochet Blanket:
Lay out your stars however you would like. Then using the long tail from your magic circle and a tapestry needle, begin sewing them into place. Be sure to sew in a circle and weave in your ends so your stars are nice and secure.
Continue attaching the stars by sewing the points of the star down making sure to stretch each point out so it is nice and flat and even.
I really love how this turned out and I think you will enjoy making it too.

I started to make the blanket.when you get to the stripes with the blue.the counts are not right.when you add 88 sts and 85 sts , you get 173.so how many would i need to chain at the beginning would i need to do.i love your flag blanket.

Hello 🙂 For the bottom half of the flag, you will want to cut the yarn and weave in the ends when you change color. For the top half of the blanket, when the blue begins to become incorporated, you will only cut the yarn for color changes on the right edge of the flag (the striped edge). Thanks!

You didn’t mention what you did when you was done with the last row. How did you end it? You skipped that part which is an important part because that’s where I’m at right now before I get to the stars. Do I sew the end or what I’m confused.
I don’t have the exact dimensions because I made the pattern from a customer request on Etsy. But, it was meant to be laid over the back of a regular sized sofa. So I would say it was about the size of a regular throw.
Did you know that your stars are not all facing in the right direction? The stars should have two of it’s points facing down. Check out a regular flag. I do love your flag, I just made one with granny squares. When I started putting my stars on my husband said they were placed wrong. I was just placing them evenly on he blue field. So I got out one of our flags and sure enough they were wrong.

Hi Leslie, Yes you will need to make smaller stars to get 50 on this blanket. This pattern is more novelty style, Jerica does have plans for a more realistic version coming up in the next month.

I am crocheting a flag composed of 3.5″ granny squares, only to realize that the pattern’s starfield had a red stripe under it, which NO American flag has, so felt I had to try to make the correction. This meant making the starfield taller by the size of one stripe, which really affected the proportions to the flag’s overall plan, so I had to take a look at that. Our flag’s proportions should be 1:1.9, according to U.S. (Flag) Code
So, I ended up laying it all out in pencil on 1/4″ graph paper and making it as proportional as I possibly could. It’s measurements are roughly 42X80 inches.
Now, it’s to the point of weaving in all those tails, stitching on the 50 stars, and stitching the remaining three blocks of stripes together.
It’s been a long, and tedious work of the heart, as I will be donating it to a patriotic group that will sell it at an auction next Feb. or March.
I will be making another one to donate to another group for a raffle, again granny squares, that will have 1/2″ smaller squares, now that I’ve got it all figured out!

I am working the stripes right now but noticed you started to add the blue into a white row but if you look at the actual American flag ?? the blue is added to a RED stripe not white. There are always 13 stripes on the flag to represent the 13 colonies. So it would be three stripes of white and on your fourth red the blue should be added right??? Maybe I’m reading the pattern wrong…. Could you help clarify? Thank you again. I’m really enjoying this blanket and can’t wait to see the finished project!
There is supposed to be a long white stripe underneath the blue field of stars – not red. A red stripe is not supposed to touch the bottom of the blue field of stars.
For some reason when I’m double crocheting in the back loop of the first chain on every 3rd loop it’s creating a big hole instead of being all together. Am I supposed to only do the 3rd chain first and every loop after that?
Yes, you are only supposed to crochet in the 3rd loop the first time around. I’m sorry for not being very clear on that this. You shouldn’t have a hole any more!

I like to keep a pen and paper handy when working a large project such as this! I usually write out the required stitch numbers for a pattern and as I finish them I simply circle the number. This helps a ton!

If you are dropping the red or white yarn how do you connect the stripes to the blue portion? I’m confused. Do you sew the 2 portions together? I’m probably not reading the pattern correctly. Please help?

Just a heads up. Stipe placement should be 6 stripes below the beginning of the blue portion. Red white red white red white. White stripe attaches to the bottom of the blue then seven stripes to the side of the blue. Starts with red ends with red.

Well, you might try blocking the blanket to get it to lay straight. For making a smaller version, depending on size, I would suggest cutting your foundation chain count in half. Then, you can make your stripes the proportionate height based on the width of your stripes. I would make a small swatch of the stripes to see exactly how it would look.

I always go with the 3 times the material cost (not sale or coupon prices) formula, then figure about out how many hours it will take me to make it and then adjust from there. If I feel like the hourly rate needs to be increased or decreased, then I’ll adjust my pricing accordingly. Hope that helps, happy hooking!
Hi Fran, That sounds lovely and I applaud your ambition! To fit that many stars I would recommend using a smaller gauge yarn, possibly crochet thread, and a some trial and error. I would make a couple and then place them on the blue square and use a ruler to estimate how many you could fit based on the size that they are working up in a smaller gauge fiber.
I made this for my brother, a Marine in Afghanistan. He loved it. The hardest part was attaching the stars…but once I did a few it got easier. Thanks for the pattern!

I looked up the easiest way to sew crocheted stars on a large American flag, and up came the flag that I just finished! I want to thank you for the great instructions and that is the direction that I will take! I made this flag for a young lady who is an officer in the US Army. She will love it as she loves her country!
If you start with a chain of 173 St and put first DC in 3rd chain I ended up with 170 stitches. When you start the blue if you do 88 then 85 stitches that equals 173.i only have 170 stitches. So was I suppose to start 176 stitches? Thanks I am a bit confused
I’ve just finished writing out the pattern and am going to start working this, I was reading the comments and questions, did you revise this pattern or can’t these people read? You have the correct number of stripes, the blue field IS started with a red stripe, there are 6 stripes below the blue field and there are 7 stripes to the side, after each correction made by your readers I went back over the pattern I had just finished writing and couldn’t figure out where they were getting that you weren’t correct in the stripe count and the correct color when starting the blue field, I’m sorry but this is a beautiful blanket, easy and correct pattern for a flag, and I think if the commenters would just take the time to really read the pattern there wouldn’t be a need to correct you on something that is already correct, I realize the corrections are meant to be constructive but in reality they are not constructive they are critical and they are the ones who need the constructive corrections on their comments. By the way I’m thinking of doing a reverse single crochet around the edge, not for sure but I will try it and see what it looks like, I think it might help to stabilize it, we will see if I do I will send you a pic. I am confused. How many stitches should you have in a row? It looks like 173. However if you only chain 173 and then put first stitch in 3rd chain from hook that will only make 171 stitches. If you count the 2 chains as a stitch that would be 172 stitches.

Just came across this pattern a few weeks ago, and it immediately captured my attention. I made a number of modifications, including: a beginning chain of 175, an I-hook for the blanket, an H-hook for the stars, 5 rows for the red and/or white stripe(s) instead of 6 rows. I made these changes so that my blanket would be smaller. My finished size measured approximately 40”X58”, a better size for my needs. Thank you for this pattern. It wasn’t difficult, but it became quite tedious when attaching all those stars. Not fun! I would have attached a picture, but wasn’t sure how to accomplish this. Thanks again.

I didn’t use an edging. But if you wanted to, I’d recommend a simple SC edging or some other simple stitch.

For the flag blanket, I actually used the red heart yarn from the LOVE collection. It’s a bit softer than their super saver yarns.

So are you double crocheting in the back loop of the original chain?’ I’ve never done that in the ‘chain’ so was curious… my 7 year old grandson wants me to make him a flag afghan..and thisnone stood out to me!. He has many quilts from me and well what’s one more project for my one grandchild!;)
Yes in the back loop is correct. It just adds a bit of texture! I don’t think you can ever have too many handmade quilts!
Thank you for the free pattern. I did have one question though. I am working the stripes right now but noticed you started to add the blue into a white row but if you look at the actual American flag ?? the blue is added to a RED stripe not white. There are always 13 stripes on the flag to represent the 13 colonies. So it would be three stripes of white and on your fourth red the blue should be added right??? Maybe I’m reading the pattern wrong…. Could you help clarify? Thank you again. I’m really enjoying this blanket and can’t wait to see the finished project!

There is supposed to be a long white stripe underneath the blue field of stars – not red. A red stripe is not supposed to touch the bottom of the blue field of stars.
For some reason when I’m double crocheting in the back loop of the first chain on every 3rd loop it’s creating a big hole instead of being all together. Am I supposed to only do the 3rd chain first and every loop after that?
Yes, you are only supposed to crochet in the 3rd loop the first time around. I’m sorry for not being very clear on that this. You shouldn’t have a hole any more!

I like to keep a pen and paper handy when working a large project such as this! I usually write out the required stitch numbers for a pattern and as I finish them I simply circle the number. This helps a ton!

If you are dropping the red or white yarn how do you connect the stripes to the blue portion? I’m confused. Do you sew the 2 portions together? I’m probably not reading the pattern correctly. Please help?

Just a heads up. Stipe placement should be 6 stripes below the beginning of the blue portion. Red white red white red white. White stripe attaches to the bottom of the blue then seven stripes to the side of the blue. Starts with red ends with red.

Well, you might try blocking the blanket to get it to lay straight. For making a smaller version, depending on size, I would suggest cutting your foundation chain count in half. Then, you can make your stripes the proportionate height based on the width of your stripes. I would make a small swatch of the stripes to see exactly how it would look.

I always go with the 3 times the material cost (not sale or coupon prices) formula, then figure about out how many hours it will take me to make it and then adjust from there. If I feel like the hourly rate needs to be increased or decreased, then I’ll adjust my pricing accordingly. Hope that helps, happy hooking!
I want to put 50 or 52 stars on what size star should I make to fit all of them
Hi Fran, That sounds lovely and I applaud your ambition! To fit that many stars I would recommend using a smaller gauge yarn, possibly crochet thread, and a some trial and error. I would make a couple and then place them on the blue square and use a ruler to estimate how many you could fit based on the size that they are working up in a smaller gauge fiber.
How many stars did you use/make?
Unfortunately, I can’t remember the exact amount but I used enough to fill up the blue space. There have been others who have done the full fifty.
I made this for my brother, a Marine in Afghanistan. He loved it. The hardest part was attaching the stars…but once I did a few it got easier. Thanks for the pattern!

I looked up the easiest way to sew crocheted stars on a large American flag, and up came the flag that I just finished! I want to thank you for the great instructions and that is the direction that I will take! I made this flag for a young lady who is an officer in the US Army. She will love it as she loves her country!
If you start with a chain of 173 St and put first DC in 3rd chain I ended up with 170 stitches. When you start the blue if you do 88 then 85 stitches that equals 173.i only have 170 stitches. So was I suppose to start 176 stitches? Thanks I am a bit confused

I’ve just finished writing out the pattern and am going to start working this, I was reading the comments and questions, did you revise this pattern or can’t these people read? You have the correct number of stripes, the blue field IS started with a red stripe, there are 6 stripes below the blue field and there are 7 stripes to the side, after each correction made by your readers I went back over the pattern I had just finished writing and couldn’t figure out where they were getting that you weren’t correct in the stripe count and the correct color when starting the blue field, I’m sorry but this is a beautiful blanket, easy and correct pattern for a flag, and I think if the commenters would just take the time to really read the pattern there wouldn’t be a need to correct you on something that is already correct, I realize the corrections are meant to be constructive but in reality they are not constructive they are critical and they are the ones who need the constructive corrections on their comments. By the way I’m thinking of doing a reverse single crochet around the edge, not for sure but I will try it and see what it looks like, I think it might help to stabilize it, we will see if I do I will send you a pic. I’ve almost completed this Beautiful Afghan, I’m going to attempt to put stars on both sides. 🙂 I have loved how simple this pattern is and how quickly I have been able to get to the star application part. <3 I am making it for Our Family Reunion Raffle, which is at the end of July, I'm sure that it's going to be a Great Hit with my family. I'm not sure what size hook I have used as it's a wooden one that my stepfather had made for my Mom many years ago, but it could be close to a K or J. I am confused. How many stitches should you have in a row? It looks like 173. However if you only chain 173 and then put first stitch in 3rd chain from hook that will only make 171 stitches. If you count the 2 chains as a stitch that would be 172 stitches.
Doesn’t say how much of each color.says 7.5 skeins

Just came across this pattern a few weeks ago, and it immediately captured my attention. I made a number of modifications, including: a beginning chain of 175, an I-hook for the blanket, an H-hook for the stars, 5 rows for the red and/or white stripe(s) instead of 6 rows. I made these changes so that my blanket would be smaller. My finished size measured approximately 40”X58”, a better size for my needs. Thank you for this pattern. It wasn’t difficult, but it became quite tedious when attaching all those stars. Not fun! I would have attached a picture, but wasn’t sure how to accomplish this. Thanks again.
