Easy Crochet Top Pattern

Method:  Crochet

Skill Level:  Easy

Materials:

  • 5mm / H hook
  • Stitch marker
  • Yarn Needle
  • Scissors
  • Yarn, Lion Brand ZZ Twist in Red, White, and Royal Blue pictured (see pattern notes for yarn quantities)

Gauge:  1” x 1” = 4 sts x 5 rows

Abbreviations:

  • CH – chain
  • SC – single crochet
  • SCbs – single crochet below stitch (see pattern notes for SCbs stitch instructions)

Pattern Notes:

This garment is written in 3 sizes: XS – S, M – L, and XL – 3XL.

I base my designs on the of the standard body measurement chart provided by the Craft Yarn Council.

 ***check out the chart here!

This is a tighter fitting garment so I would size up if you want it more loose.

This garment is designed as a long crop top, meaning it sits about 2 inches below the navel.

Once you determine your bust size, you can choose which size would best fit you!

Yarn Quantities: For sizes XS – M you’ll need 2 red, 2 white, and 1 royal blue.  Approximately 1230 total yards.  For the larger sizes, you will need 2.5 – 3 red, 2.5 – 3 white, and 1.5 – 2 royal blue.  Approximately 1600 – 1970 total yards.

The pattern will be written: XS (S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL)

This top is constructed from the bottom up in 2 identical panels with optional sleeve cuff and then seamed together.

SCbs Stitch Instructions: (also called the Shallow Single Crochet, the Faux Knit Stitch, and the Waistcoat Stitch) SC in the space below the normal stitch (the center of the post).  A video tutorial for how to crochet this stitch can be found below.

PATTERN:

Body Panels (make 2)

Chain  61 (69, 77, 85, 93, 101, 109)

Row 1: (red color) – in the 2nd CH from the hook place a SC. Continue with SCs all the way across. CH 1. Turn.

Row 2: (CH-1 counts as SC) place a SCbs in each stitch all the way across ending with a SC in the CH 1 of the previous row. CH 1. Turn.

Row 3 – 17 (17, 19, 19, 20, 20, 20) : (CH-1 counts as SC) place a SCbs in each stitch all the way across ending with a SC in the CH 1 of the previous row. CH 1. Turn.

Repeat row 2 for all remaining rows.

***Stripe Notes.

The XS and S have a total of 17 rows per color for a total of 85 rows.

The M and L have a total of 19 rows per color for a total of 95 rows.

The XL – 3XL have a total of 20 rows per color for a total of 100 rows.

Tie off.

Arm Cuffs (make 2)

Chain  6

Row 1: (blue color) – In the 2nd CH from the hook place a SC. SC in each stitch across. CH 1. Turn.

Row 2: (CH-1 counts as SC) place a SC in the back loop of each stitch all the way across. CH 1. Turn.

Row 3 – 38 (40, 46, 48, 54, 56, 56) repeat row 2.  CH 1. Turn.

Repeat row 2 for all remaining rows.

Tie off.

SEAMING:

In the diagram you can see how the pieces need to be laid out for assembling.

Lay all of the pieces face down.

Using the color yarn of your choice, start by seaming the shoulder area.  You want to leave a head hold about 8-12 inches long.  Starting from the neck and working out you will SC the pieces together to create the shoulder.

***the head hole size is more of a personal choice. Determine for yourself exactly how large you would like it to be .

Make sure you line up the sleeves with the center of the shoulder/neck seam. SC the sleeve to the panel on both sides. (Refer to the diagram for how to lay the 4 pieces.)

Once the panels are all attached, you’re going to fold the sweater with right sides together (so the garment is inside out). Then, you will line everything up and begin seaming the sides closed with a SC row starting at the waist and working your way up to the cuff.

Tie off.  Weave in all ends.
