I absolutely love all sorts of fiber crafts and with this crochet wrap design, I wanted to incorporate 2 different styles: crochet and cross stitch.

You will find a detailed diagram showing you exactly how to make the plus signs or “stars” for this wrap. After completing each wrap I’m sure you will be itching to try an exclusive cross stitch project!

Get The Pattern PDF Here!

Method  Crochet and Cross Stitch

Skill Level  Advanced Beginner

Materials:

  • 5mm / H size hook
  • Stitch Marker
  • Yarn Needle
  • Scissors
  • ZZ Twist Yarn in Blue, Red, and White pictured (see pattern notes for quantity) GET THE ZZ TWIST FROM LION BRAND HERE!

Gauge:  4” x 4” = 12 sts x 17 rows

Abbreviations:

  • CH  – chain
  • SC – single crochet
  • HDC – half double crochet
  • HDCbs – half double crochet below stitch (see pattern notes for HDCbs stitch instructions)

Pattern Notes:

Pattern written in 2 sizes: women’s M/L and XL/2XL

I base my designs on the of the standard body measurement chart provided by the Craft Yarn Council.

 ***check out the chart here!

The pattern sizes are written as: M/L (XL/2XL)

This sweater is constructed bottom up, in 3 panels and then seamed together.

You will need 4 balls of white (color A), 4 balls of red (color B), and 3 balls of blue (color C) for the size M/L.  Approximately 1441 total yards.

You will need 5 balls of white (color A), 5 balls of red (color B), and 4 balls of blue (color C) for the size XL/2XL.  Approximately 1834 total yards.

HDCbs instructions: HDC into the V that forms in front of the work when crocheting an HDC.  Make sure to go through both the front and back V.

Special Color Join Instructions: Finish off the previous HDCbs by yarn over the blue as normal for the final pull through but also yarning over the white at the same time.  You will place both the long and short tail of the white on the back side of the panel.  Yarn over using just the blue and do the HDC BS as normal.  You will need each white strand to be about 30’ long for each cross stitch. (See photos at the end of this pattern for visual aid).  Please note this step is optional, you could use stitch markers to mark the spot instead.  This pattern provides info as to what stitches to mark.

FRONT PANELS (MAKE 2):

Row 1: HDC in 3rd CH from the hook, HDC in each CH across. Turn

Row 86 (96) – 90 (100): CH 1 , HDCbs across, HDC in the CH-1, Turn Tie off and weave in all of the ends except for the ones for the cross stitch portion

CROSS STITCH:

While making the cross stitch pay close attention to your tension.  If the tension is too tight the finished product may be distorted or bunch up.  Ideally aim to have the crosses being about the same tension as the actual crocheted panels stitches.

The center X of each cross is where you have placed a stitch marker or where the white color has been joined with the special join.

We will be working the X’s of the cross stitch having the V’s of the HDCbs in the middle of the X.

CROSS STITCH INSTRUCTIONS:

Each X is formed first by creating a half stitch – a diagonal slash.

From the back, push up a threaded needle through one of the corners in the panel.  Then, from the front, push the needle through the opposite corner on the panel.

The cross is formed by creating another diagonal slash over the first half stitch, but in the opposite direction.

You can either follow the recommended order for creating the cross or you can create your own.

Once you are done all the stitches for the individual cross make sure to tie a knot at the back and cut the ends.

SEAMING:

Lay the back panel flat and right side up.

Lay the front panels on top of the back panel ride side down and lining up the sides and shoulders.

Using the color of your choice, create the shoulders by seaming the top of each front panel to the top of the back panel using 30 (36) single crochets (on each front panel) starting from the arm hole opening towards the neck opening.

Using the color of your choice, seam the sides together using single crochets, starting from the bottom of the garment working up to Row 45 (50) or your preferred arm hole opening size.

Tie off and weave in all ends.

Finish off the previous HDCbs by yarn over the blue as normal for the final pull through but also yarning over the white at the same time.  You will place both the long and short tail of the white on the back side of the panel.

Yarn over using just the blue and do the HDC BS as normal.

I just simply couldn’t master the stitch in the V of the prior row making sure it was also in the V on the back side. If I had tried it would take me a year to finish…maybe longer. Maybe my hook is not pointy enough? Regardless I ended up doing the hdc in the front and top two loops for the stripes which created a lovely looking stitch and for the blue I simply did sc which creates a fabric suitable for cross stitch. I would love to be pointed to a video on the recommended stitch to see what I was doing wrong. Haven’t finished it yet but looking forward to being able to wear it as a poll worker in the elections.
