DIY Halloween Costumes With Woodland Creatures
Hi, there friends! Happy almost Fall to you! We are getting closer and closer to that time of year… you know the time where we will take our kiddos out to collect a sack full of candy and then secretly eat it after they’ve gone to bed. *wink wink*
Today I wanted to share with you a DIY Halloween costume roundup featuring some adorable woodland creatures.
These patterns combine FREE crochet hat patterns with affordable store-bought items.
The BEST part about these DIY costumes is that the hat patterns are adorable enough to wear throughout winter and you can even reuse the outfits paired with them!
Crochet Bunny Beanie
Isn’t this just the sweetest little bunny hat?
Pair this hat with a pale pink sweatshirt and sweatpants for an adorable little girl bunny.
Got a little boy bunny in mind? Swap out the pinks for blues and omit the flower and braided tassels on the hat for a perfect bunny boy!
Take it up a notch with a Clover XL pom-pom maker and some white yarn to make a fluffy bunny tail.
Use a sewing needle and thread to attach the tail this way you can carefully remove the tail after Halloween and reuse the pants.
More Halloween Costume Inspiration
Try using a complementary neutral color instead of pinks and blues to create a big brother/big sister Bunny.
Crochet Deer Beanie
A hat that is perfect for your little doe! But what about your little buck?
This pattern calls for a Caron Cake in the colorway Strawberry Trifle. Go ahead and swap that out with a Caron Cake in the colorway Berries and Cream or Cake Pop and omit the flower detail.
Pair this with a set of neutral sweats that match the neutrals of the Caron Cake you select and BAM! one perfect little deer.
More Costume Inspiration
You can take this up a notch as well using the Clover XL pom-pom maker, some leftover yarn from the Caron Cake, and a pair of scissors to shape the pompom into more of a teardrop shape to create a deer tail.
Got an older doe or buck to dress up? Opt for neutral cakes like Buttercream or Pistachio Fudge, or vibrant ones like Blueberry Cheesecake and Funfetti.
The possibilities are endless!
Crochet Raccoon Beanie
Whip up this hat and pair it with some matching grey sweats to create yourself a masked bandit.
Add a pink or purple bow in front of one ear for a more feminine raccoon. Be sure to check out my crochet bow pattern post here.
Take it up a notch by adding a raccoon tail. Grab the yarn that was left over from making the hat and head over to my cuddly crochet worm pattern.
To create the raccoon tail with the worm pattern you’ll want to crochet the first 9 rounds with color A, crochet the next 4 rounds in color B, switch back to color A for 4 rounds, and continue until you have 25 rounds, then cut a long tail and use it to sew the tail closed.
Use sewing a sewing needle and thread to attach the tail that way you can carefully remove the tail after Halloween and reuse the pants.
Crochet Fox Beanie
Crochet Fox Beanie Pattern & Sly Fox Beanie Pattern
Grab a pair of foxy colored sweats and put it together with one of these adorable fox hats for your little woodland creature.
Just like the raccoon pattern you can create a fox tail with the yarn leftover from the hat and my cuddly worm pattern.
Follow the worm pattern starting with the white yarn. Change color to your foxy colored yarn at round 12 and then continue until round 25 where you will cut the yarn leaving a long yarn tail and sew the tail closed.
Use a sewing needle and thread to secure the tail to the back of the outfit so that it can be carefully cut and removed later. Create a furry white chest using the leftover white yarn, this bib pattern from Donna’s Crochet Designs, and a wire cat brush called a cat slicker.
Learn New Crochet Techniques
I know what you’re thinking… What did I just read? Yarn plus bib pattern plus cat slicker equals furry chest?
Absolutely!
If you are familiar with the amigurumi style of crochet, then you may have already heard of this and have seen some of the beautiful faux fur results that this technique lends itself to.
Click here for a video tutorial using the cat slicker method.
All you have to do is crochet the bib pattern as normal, then use the cat slicker to brush the front side of the bib until it’s as fuzzy as you like. (You can even fluff up the tail too!)
***Please be advised that this technique won’t work on all yarn types and you could always crochet a sample swatch to check the brush-ability of the yarn.
As a general rule of thumb, if the yarn is more like Red Heart Super Saver or Red Heart Soft/With Love, then it will fuzz up nicely with the brushing technique and yarn like Lily’s Sugar’n Cream will not.
Attach the bib to the shirt by baste stitching around the bib with a sewing needle and thread.
If you’re not familiar with a baste stitch, don’t worry, it’s just a long, loose stitch used to hold two fabrics together temporarily until a permanent stitch is sewn.
In this case, we won’t be sewing a permanent stitch, we’ll just cut the the baste stitches after Halloween so that the furry chest can be removed and the shirt used again.
Crochet Bear Beanie
Create a bear with this sweet bear hat from Jenny and Teddy. Pair this with some cozy brown sweats and create a tail by attaching an XL pom-pom from the yarn left over after making the hat.
Use a sewing needle and thread to attach the tail so that you can carefully remove the tail after Halloween and reuse the pants.
Add a bow to the hat for an adorable Ursula (that’s Latin for little she-bear, cool, right?) Be sure to check out my crochet bow pattern post here.
Crochet Owl Beanie
This is certainly one of the cutest owl hats that I have ever seen! The added cape is perfect for creating the look of owl wings!
I would pair this with a white shirt and light brown pants, however, both a white shirt and pants or brown shirt and pants would look equally adorable.
This hat would look great for boys or girls, but you could always add a bow and eyelashes to the hat for a more feminine look.
For a more masculine look, you could omit the fringe on the cape and instead crochet a few more rows to make up the length and swap out the scalloped border for a single crochet border.
Check out my bow pattern here.

Hi Cathy, So sorry about that, the link was showing on my end, but when I pulled up the post in and incognito window it did not show a link there. Anyway, I just deleted it and re-added it on my end and checked to make sure it is working now. Thanks so much for your patience, I really appreciate it! 🙂
Cathy
Ok thanks I will try again
Cathy
Where exactly is the link supposed to be? Because nothing unfortunately has transpired to a link? Its not at the top? Not under picture? Still. Guess I’m just not supposed to make it
