PATTERN NOTES:

I did make the brim for this beanie longer than some of my other ones. The reason for this is to give you the option of wearing the brim folded over or to leave it longer for an exaggerated slouchy look.

Please see the BRIM RIBBING section below the video tutorial for custom sizing info.

For a video tutorial on how to create a pom pom with a Clover XL pom pom maker click HERE.

BRIM RIBBING

CH 15

Row 1 – DC in the 4th CH. DC all the way across. CH 2. Turn.

Row 2 – DC in the BACK LOOPS only. CH 2. Turn.

Row 3 – ?

You will continue with the Row 2 repeat until you have a brim the correct size you need for a head.

***For a standard head circumference chart click HERE.

Join the brim by SL ST the ends together. Flip the brim right side out and CH 1.  We will now be working in the round to create the rest of the beanie.

Round 2 – DC all the way around. SL ST to CH 2. CH 2.

Round 3 – *DC/DC/4 FPDC/DC/DC. Repeat from * all the way around. SL ST to CH 2. CH 2.

Round 4 – *DC/DC/skip over 2 FPDC/work 2 FPTC into the previous FPDC/ WORKING BEHIND the skipped sts place 2 FPTC/WORKING FORWARD DC into the next 2 sts. Repeat from * all the way around. SL ST to CH 2. CH 2.

Round 5 – *DC/DC/4 FPDC/DC/DC. Repeat from * all the way around. SL ST to CH 2. CH 2.

Round 6 –  repeat round 4

Round 7 – repeat round 5

Round 8 – repeat round 4

Round 9 – repeat round 5

Round 10 – repeat round 4

Round 11 – repeat round 5

Round 12 – repeat round 4

Round 13 – repeat round 5

Round 14 – repeat round 4 ***end with a CH 1

Round 15 – *SC/SC2TOG. Repeat from * all the way around. Tie off leaving a long tail.

Now is when you will weave your tail in and out of the top sts to “sew” your opening closed. From here you can add a pom pom or leave it as is. I opted to place an XL pompom on the top. I absolutely LOVE the overall look!

That’s it!

hi, i am currently making this beanie. I do not understand the Round 4 means. Can you explain it more specifically?

      Sure!

This is where your cable is going to begin forming. When you get to the FPDC stitches you are going to skip the first 2 FPDCs and then you place 2 FPTCs into the next 2 FPDCs. Then, working behind the 2 sts you just made you place 2 FPTCs into the skipped FPDCs. Then begin working forward again!

It’s gonna look weird initially because the cables aren’t totally formed. But after a few rounds, it will look right!

Let me know if you’re still having issues.

This beanie is just what I am looking for – thank you. What size does this make? How many chain stitches do I start with if I want to make an adult, women’s size?
    Thank You!

This size is basically for a child/teenager. Simply add a few more stitches (while maintaining the correct multiple) and you should get the right size. Typically the circumference for n adult head is about 20in. Just remember the yarn will stretch with the ribbing on this one so you might not need to add too many more to reach an adult size. Let me know if you need and more help!

For row 5 do you skip the first 2 stitches and work back like row 4?

Hi Shelley, No, you’ll want to work row 5 the same as row 3. Row 4 is the only row that has you working forward/backward. Please feel free to join our Facebook group if you have any more questions. Here is the link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/109380736230440/

Just finished my first Owen Beanie! I absolutely love it! I used the suggested Lion Brand Heartland yarn and a J 6.00 mm hook. So pleased with the softness and warmth this beanie provides. Thank you for a lovely tutorial and pattern. I will definitely be making more of this one! 🙂

Do you have the pattern gauge for this project? I crochet very tightly so it’s usually important for me to to a gauge swatch before I start or things turn out too small.

Can you tell me how many yards or skeins of yarn it takes to make this pattern?
