The Perfect Crochet Floppy Hat for Summer & Fall!

Who’s ready to end Summer time in style and transition into Fall? Pick me! Today’s pattern is sooo stunning and will be the perfect crochet floppy hat pattern you’ve ever tried!

Before we dive in, let’s be sure to gather all the supplies we are gonna need:

MATERIALS (includes affiliate links)

  • 2 skeins of REWIND yarn from Lion Brand
  • 6MM crochet hook
  • scissors
  • tapestry needle
  • stitch markers (optional)

Alright, now that we’ve got all our items, it’s time to dive right in to this awesome, quick project!

Skill Level: Medium Skill Level

Gauge: 13sts x 16rows = 4” squared

Dimensions: 

Head Circumference: appr. 22”

Top of the hat to the beginning of the brim section: appr. 6.5”

Brim width: appr. 4.25”

Abbreviations: 

SC – single crochet

SL ST – slip stitch

Notes: 

We will be working this piece from the top down. Starting with a magic circle we will work in rounds to create the hat body. Once completed we will create the brim of the hat ending the last few rows in a contrasting color.

Pattern Instructions

Round 1: Beginning with a Magic Circle, you will place 6 sc inside the ring. SL ST to the first SC and “close” your first round. (pull your magic circle tail to close the center hole).

Round 2: CH 1 (does NOT count as a SC). Place 2 SC into each stitch all the way around. SL ST to the first SC. 

Round 3: CH 1 (does NOT count as a SC). *Place 2 SC into the first stitch. SC into the next stitch. *  Repeat from * to * all the way around. SL ST to the first SC.

Round 4: CH 1 (does NOT count as a SC). *Place 2 SC into the first stitch. SC once into the next 2 stitches. *  Repeat from * to * all the way around. SL ST to the first SC.

Round 5: CH 1 (does NOT count as a SC). *Place 2 SC into the first stitch. SC once into the next 3 stitches. *  Repeat from * to * all the way around. SL ST to the first SC.

Round 6: CH 1 (does NOT count as a SC). *Place 2 SC into the first stitch. SC once into the next 4 stitches. *  Repeat from * to * all the way around. SL ST to the first SC.

Round 7: CH 1 (does NOT count as a SC). *Place 2 SC into the first stitch. SC once into the next 5 stitches. *  Repeat from * to * all the way around. SL ST to the first SC.

Round 8: CH 1 (does NOT count as a SC). *Place 2 SC into the first stitch. SC once into the next 6 stitches. *  Repeat from * to * all the way around. SL ST to the first SC.

Round 9: CH 1 (does NOT count as a SC). *Place 2 SC into the first stitch. SC once into the next 7 stitches. *  Repeat from * to * all the way around. SL ST to the first SC.

Round 10: CH 1 (does NOT count as a SC) Place 1 SC into each stitch all the way around. SL ST to the first SC.

Round 11: CH 1 (does NOT count as a SC) Place 1 SC into each stitch all the way around. SL ST to the first SC.

Round 12: CH 1 (does NOT count as a SC). *Place 2 SC into the first stitch. SC once into the next 8 stitches. *  Repeat from * to * all the way around. SL ST to the first SC.

Round 13 – 16: CH 1 (does NOT count as a SC) Place 1 SC into each stitch all the way around. SL ST to the first SC.

Round 17: CH 1 (does NOT count as SC). Place 2 SC into the first stitch. SC once into the next 5 stitches. *Place 2 SC into the next stitch. SC once into the next 5 stitches. * Repeat from * to * all the way around ending with one SC into each of the last 3 stitches. SL ST to the first SC.

Round 18 – 27: CH 1 (does NOT count as a SC) Place 1 SC into each stitch all the way around. SL ST to the first SC.

STARTING THE CROCHET FLOPPY HAT BRIM:

Round 28: CH 1 (does NOT count as SC). Place 2 SC into the first stitch. SC once into the next 7 stitches. *Place 2 SC into the next stitch. SC once into the next 7 stitches. * Repeat from * to * all the way around. SL ST to the first SC.

Round 29: CH 1 (does NOT count as a SC) Place 1 SC into each stitch all the way around. SL ST to the first SC.

Round 30: CH 1 (does NOT count as SC). Place 2 SC into the first stitch. SC once into the next 9 stitches. *Place 2 SC into the next stitch. SC once into the next 9 stitches. * Repeat from * to * all the way around. SL ST to the first Sc.

Round 31: CH 1 (does NOT count as a SC) Place 1 SC into each stitch all the way around. SL ST to the first SC.

Round 32: CH 1 (does NOT count as SC). Place 2 SC into the first stitch. SC once into the next 11 stitches. *Place 2 SC into the next stitch. SC once into the next 11 stitches. * Repeat from * to * all the way around ending with one SC into each of the last 2 stitches. SL ST to the first SC.

Round 33: CH 1 (does NOT count as a SC) Place 1 SC into each stitch all the way around. SL ST to the first SC.

Round 34: CH 1 (does NOT count as SC). Place 2 SC into the first stitch. SC once into the next 13 stitches. *Place 2 SC into the next stitch. SC once into the next 13 stitches. * Repeat from * to * all the way around ending with one SC into each of the last 9 stitches. SL ST to the first SC.

Round 35: CH 1 (does NOT count as a SC) Place 1 SC into each stitch all the way around. SL ST to the first SC.

Round 36: CH 1 (does NOT count as SC). Place 2 SC into the first stitch. SC once into the next 15 stitches. *Place 2 SC into the next stitch. SC once into the next 15 stitches. * Repeat from * to * all the way around ending with one SC into each of the last 3 stitches. SL ST to the first SC.

Round 37: CH 1 (does NOT count as a SC) Place 1 SC into each stitch all the way around. SL ST to the first SC.

(chang to contrasting color: optional) 

Round 38: CH 1 (does NOT count as SC). Place 2 SC into the first stitch. SC once into the next 17 stitches. *Place 2 SC into the next stitch. SC once into the next 17 stitches. * Repeat from * to * all the way around ending with one SC into each of the last 14 stitches. SL ST to the first SC.

Round 39:  CH 1 (does NOT count as a SC) Place 1 SC into each stitch all the way around. SL ST to the first SC.

Round 40: CH 1 (does NOT count as SC). Place 2 SC into the first stitch. SC once into the next 19 stitches. *Place 2 SC into the next stitch. SC once into the next 19 stitches. * Repeat from * to * all the way around ending with one SC into each of the last 8 stitches. SL ST to the first SC.

Round 41: CH 1 (does NOT count as a SC) Place 1 SC into each stitch all the way around. SL ST to the first SC.

Tie off and weave in all your ends.

ENSURING A FLAT BRIM:

If you want to make sure you have a nice, flat brim. I recommend blocking this section of the hat. You can either steam the brim and then pin it down and allow it to dry flat. Or, you can spritz it with water and pin down allowing it to dry flat. 

Always be sure to follow the laundry care instructions on your yarn and never touch an iron directly to the fibers.

    Hi! I have a question regarding stitch count (I count stitches in my rounds when I make hats so I know where I am in the pattern…) And in row 17 after the last 2sc there are 5 sc remaining, but the pattern mentioned the last 3…
