I love to look at the things around me to gather inspiration for projects. A few weeks ago my husband was on a business trip in Houston.
Having been born and raised in Houston I was reminiscing about the beaches down in Galveston.
I had some variegated Bernat Blanket yarn on hand. I quickly grabbed my crochet stitches book and landed on a color scheme and got to hooking!
This piece is more of a lap blanket/throw. It isn’t huge but you could easily adjust it to fit whatever your desired size. The thing I love most is how quickly it works up as well as how soft the Bernat Blanket yarn is.
***VIDEO TUTORIAL AFTER THE PATTERN
An option I gave to this blanket was the tassels. You can opt to leave them off but I loved how it made the blanket more of a statement piece!
Let’s get started!
The Waterfall Throw – A Bernat Blanket Yarn FREE Crochet Pattern
MATERIALS:
- 2 large rolls of Bernat Blanket yarn in White
- 4 large rolls of Bernat Blanket yarn in Teal Dreams
- size P/Q 15MM hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry Needle
PATTERN NOTES:
- You will want to start off your blanket with COLOR A (white). We will work the colors like this:
- 2 rows (color A)
- 5 rows (color B)
- I also made the tassels in the white color but you could leave them off or do them in the teal color if you’d like!
Gauge: 8 stitches X 8 rows = 4 square inches
Dimensions (41 inches wide X 34 inches long) ***doesn’t include tassel length
Be sure you aren’t holding your tension too tight. This is more of an airy, light-weight pattern.
BERNAT BLANKET YARN FREE CROCHET PATTERN:

Row 2 (color A) – Work 2 SC into the same stitch as your CH 1, *1 SC into each of next 7 SC, skip 2 SC, 1 SC into each of the next 7 sts, 3 SC into the next SC; repeat from * to the end, omitting 1 SC at the end of the last repeat.
Row 3 – 7 (color B) repeat row 2
Row 8 – 9 (color A) repeat row 2
Rows 10 – 67 you will repeat row 2 as well as the color changing combination.
Once you are done you will tie off, weave in your ends and enjoy!
OR
You will make yourself tassels for all of the points at the ends of the blanket.
TASSEL MAKING:
Take a book approximately 8in wide and wrap your yarn for a total of 25 times. Then, you will cute a string about 6 inches long and tie it to the top. This is where you will tie your tassel to the blanket.
Cut your tassel at the bottom to make the fringe all even.
Next cut 2 more strings about 6 inches long and tie them equal distances apart to create the “bubbles” you see in the photo below.

I want to make this as a thank you gift for an aunt of my husbands who is allowing us to stay with her during an out of state visit to visit my father in laws grave. I am just wanting to know how to adjust the beginning chain length if I want it to be a bit larger. Thank you so much. Beautiful throw!

I am also wanting to make this blanket a little bit bigger for my 10 year old son. Can you tell me the chain count? This is a beautiful blanket!

I love this afghan, and I’ve made it twice for wedding presents. It comes out larger for me, though–49 inches wide by 72 inches long, at 65 rows. I think that’s a great size, though I might skip one repeat next time and only use 3 skeins of the colored yarn. Thanks for sharing the pattern!
