Hi there maker friends! If you’ve been following me for a while, then you probably know about my love affair with color and texture.

This love affair fuels my creativity for design and I’m so excited to share with you how this inspiration has come to life in my Bits and Bobbles bobble stitch crochet sweater!

Click HERE to buy the Bits & Bobbles Crochet Sweater Pattern on Ravelry!

Bobble Stitch Crochet Sweater FREE Pattern

I would rate the skill level of this pattern as a practiced beginner. It’s easy enough for a beginner who has practiced crochet either by swatching or making rectangular shapes like scarves to accomplish.

The alternating bobble stitch pattern with double crochet also gives this simple sweater pattern enough visual appeal for even a seasoned crocheter to enjoy.

Some of the links in this post may be affiliate links, meaning, at no additional cost to you, I will earn a commission if you click through and make a purchase.

Materials:

  • 6mm (size J) crochet hook
  • 370 – 1800 yards of worsted weight (size 4) yarn, Red Heart With Love in White and Cornsilk pictured
  • tapestry needle
  • scissors

Abbreviations (U.S. Terms):

  • CH – chain
  • SC – single crochet
  • DC – double crochet
  • YO – yarn over
  • STS/sts – stitches
  • BS – bobble stitch (see pattern notes for stitch instructions)

Pattern Notes:

Bobble Stitch Instructions: YO, draw up a loop. YO, pull through 2 loops. Repeat this a total of 4 times (you should have 5 loops on your hook). YO, pull through all 5 loops. CH 1. Bobble stitch complete.

There are multiple sizes available in child and adult! In the child’s size this pattern includes sizes 2 – 16. In the adult sizes you will have the option to choose from an XS all the way up to a 5X!

You can easily customize this modern 3/4 length sleeve, crop top sweater by adding more rows for length or removing rows for added crop drama.

The Bits and Bobbles sweater was designed with a 2 inch positive ease which basically means that I’ve taken the bust measurement as the widest part of the body and I have added 2 additional inches to give some space.

The simple 4 panel construction of this sweater allows for beginners to dive in to the garment construction world of crochet.

As the name suggests, this pattern utilizes the bobble crochet stitch as well as single and double crochets. All of which can be seen in the video tutorial below (link to this video is also included in the pattern PDF that can be purchased on Ravelry HERE).

row 2 – ?: CH 1 counts as a SC. In each stitch you will place a SC into the back loop only. CH 1. Turn.

Seam short ends together with single crochets to form a tube. ***Continue to Seaming Section.

Seaming Section

I recommend seaming using single crochets. I prefer this method because I feel like it gives more control to the seam. Sometimes when stitching with a tapestry needle, you’ll find that stitches will gather or they’ll be too tight, and in my opinion the single crochet row is more secure and it offers more evenness when it comes to seaming.

Attaching The Body Panels

When you are seaming this sweater you will start at the shoulders. Place both body panels long ways as in the graphic below.

Seam shoulders together making sure to leave a head hole opening of appr. 8 – 10 inches (measured from the center out) for a child’s head or appr. 10 – 12 inches (measured from the center out) for an adult’s head. Cut yarn and fasten off.

Attaching The Sleeves

Take your sleeve panel and fold it in half to find the center of the panel, then unfold and line up the center of the sleeve panel with the shoulder seam you just created. Seam each sleeve to the body taking care to seam evenly as to avoid an unwanted bunching or pulling. Cut yarn and fasten off.

***refer to video link for visual tutorial

Closing Up The Body

Take the garment and fold it wrong side out with the armpits, cuffs, and waist all lined up.

Start at the cuff and seam towards the armpit. Cut yarn and fasten off. Then begin at the waist and seam up towards the armpit being sure to overlap your sleeve stitches to make sure you don’t leave any holes in the armpit. Cut yarn and fasten off.

Ribbed Funnel Neck Attachment

Turn the neck ribbing right side out and place inside the head hole of the sweater.

Be careful to line everything up so there is no bunching. I recommend using stitch markers to hold the collar in place while you seam it on.

Then you will simply add a SC round to attach the neck ribbing to the body of the sweater. Cut yarn and fasten off.

Weave in your ends, turn right side out and enjoy!

    Hi,
Cute pattern! What are the corresponding measurements in inches for the XS, S, etc.? Also, what are the yarn requirements for each size?
Thank you so much. Can’t wait to get started!

Hi! I really like this pattern, I’m just confused about whether I’m an XS or a small. Do you have a sizing chart?

I think that it might be helpful to include a sizing chart with measurements, I got quite far before realizing that the medium sweater I was making would not fit like I expected.

Amazing sweater! Saving this page for when I have a bit more free time but will definitely buy the pattern when I do.

Was ideally looking for a bobble “cardigan” pattern. Not sure how easy it would be to turn this pattern into a chunky cardigan with lovely wooden buttons? Was thinking very oversized with long sleeves.

Any ideas or tips? Would be happy to purchase the pattern if you had the time to make a slightly amended one.

    Take care

    Hi there,
I’m trying to find a link or information for your sizing – every time I go to find the PDF on Ravelry it brings me back to this page and I’m going around in circles. Can you please share the bust measurement of each size please.
