The Evergreen Trellis Beanie was inspired by the Pantone color of the year….GREEN! I knew I wanted something unique, with lots of detailing and textures. I decided on a trellis knitting stitch because I felt like the “look” of climbing would give the exact detail I was looking for.

I was right!

I would rank this knitting pattern as an Intermediate. There are some things which a beginning might find overwhelming, but hey, don’t let that stop you from trying!

The chunky purled brim is lovely too! Using the XL Clover pompom maker I added the whimsical touch atop the beanie but even if you opted to leave the pom off, it’s still a great looking hat!

Now let us gather supplies and get you making your own Evergreen Beanie!

WHAT I USED:

  • size 13 straight needles
  • 1 skein BigTwist chunky yarn Or something similar like Lion Brand Wool-Ease
  • Tapestry needle
  • scissors

For Measurements in Head Sizing:

Toddler -12 months – 3 years
Hat height = 8″
Head Circumference: 18″ to 20 ”
………………………………………………………..
Child – 3 – 10 years
Hat height =8.5″
Head Circumference: 19″ – 20 1/2″
………………………………………………………..
Teens
Hat height 9-10″
Head Circumference: 20 1/2″ – 22″
………………………………………………………..
Adult Woman
Head Circumference: 21.5″ – 22.5″
………………………………………………………..
Adult Man
Head Circumference: 23″ – 24″

This pattern works in multiples of 6+3 so once you know your circumference you can cast on the appropriate amount of stitches. For today’s tutorial, we are working with a hat made for a 4-year-old.

THE PATTERN:

Cast On – 33

Row 1 – 10 work all knit stitches on the right and wrong sides (this is making the brim)

(8 row repeat for the trellis portion)

Row 11 – Purl all the way across

Row 12 – K2, *sl 5, wyif, ki; repeat from * to last st, K1

Row 13 – Purl all the way across

Row 14 – K4, *K1 uls, K5; repeat from * to last 5 sts, K1 uls, K4

Row 15 – Purl all the way across

Row 16 – K1, sl 3 wyif, K1 * sl 5 wyif, K1; repeat from * to last 4 sts, sl 3 wyif, K1

Row 17 – Purl all the way across

Row 18 – K1, * K1 uls, K5; repeat from * to last 2 sts, K1 uls, K1

Row 19 – 39: you will do the trellis pattern repeat.

Row 40 – Bind off leaving a long tail to sew up the hat.

With right sides together you will do a simple hand stitch with your long tail and tapestry needle. Be sure to keep everything together so your seam is even. Once you have your “tube” you will flip the hat inside out and with another piece of yarn, you will weave the top of the hat closed. Make sure your hole is totally closed. I like to weave the yarn through every stitch along the top going in and out, pulling the hat tight as I am closing it. Then I secure the yarn by sewing back a forth a few times before tying off and trimming the yarn.

At this point, you can decide whether you want to add a pompom. If you decide to add the pom I don’t think you’ll be disappointed!

If you make one of these beanies for yourself I would LOVE to see it! Use #yhnfashion on Instagram so I can get a glimpse! Also, if you have any questions please feel free to reach out as well.
