Do you enjoy plants? Would you call yourself a plant lady (or man)? Today I am sharing some fun, simple ways you can re-home old containers you have and create an adorable, FREE DIY plant holder!

Pin The Image Above To Save This DIY Plan Holder Project For Later!

To begin, we will need to gather together a few things:

  • empty containers of various sizes (preferably 2″ larger in diameter than the plants you’re wanting to rehome)
  • potting soil (what I bought)
  • plant, succulent or, cactus food (check out what I use here)
  • NEW (or old) plant babies!

If you’re using containers like an old candle jar etc, you’ll need to make sure and soak them in a HOT, soapy “bath” so-as to remove any remaining wax or sticker residue.

Plant Books To Add To Your Library:

  • Wild At Home: How To Style & Care For Beautiful Plants (Hilton Carter)
  • Urban Jungle: Living & Styling With Plants (Igor Josifovic)
  • Houseplants: The Complete Guide to Choosing, Growing, & Caring for Indoor Plants (Lisa Eldred Steinkopf)
  • Essential Succulents: The Beginner’s Guide (Ken Sheif)
  • Little Book of House Plants & Other Greenery (Emma Sibley)
  • How To Houseplant: A Beginner’s Guide to Making & Keeping Plant Friends (Heather Rodino)

How To Re-pot The Plants:

  1. Add-in new potting soil to the bottom of the new pot.
  2. Turn the plant on its side and gently shake it to help release the root system and dirt from the sides of the plastic container.
  3. Place the plant inside the new container (try to center it in the container as much as possible) and hold it while you take the potting soil and fill in the spaces around the plant.
  4. Once you’ve added the new soil, you’ll want to go ahead and water the plant to help get rid of air bubbles.
  5. If you notice any spots where the soil has fallen deeper into the plant, continue to add soil until you have a small amount of space left from the rim of the container and where the soil line starts.

More Frugal Container Ideas:

  • The target dollar spot oftentimes has little candles or empty containers you could easily utilize for plant containers. Especially succulents!
  • The thrift store. You could take simple glass containers and either spray paint them or paint them with chalk paint.
  • Other discount stores like Ross, TJMaxx, Marshalls or even Aldi!

The main thing is to think outside the box and look at the items you currently have around your home and ask yourself, “Could I use this in a repurposed way?”

I’d love to hear of the ways you have remade containers into planters! Or, perhaps you have a favorite discount store you love to go to for picking up cute, inexpensive pots for planting. Let me down in the comments!
