If you’ve ever wanted to whip a soft, big and lovely baby blanket, the chunky velvet crochet blanket pattern is PERFECT for you!

I love making baby blankets for friends who have just had a baby. I came up with this pattern to decrease the time it took me to make a blanket and I have loved the result every single time.

If you purchase the PDF, you will not only find 2 baby blanket size options, but you will find throw size all the way to king size!

The chunky velvet blanket features an easy HDC (half double crochet) stitch and works up so fast!

If you’re needing a fast project to make as a gift or if you’re looking for a simple item to make and sell, the chunky velvet blanket is the perfect pattern for you!

Chunky Velvet Blanket Pattern Notes:

If you’re using the velvet yarn, you will want to make sure that you are crocheting with a tighter tension. This will help to alleviate any loose loops or uneven stitches.

Multiple sizes are available in this pattern pdf so please read through the sizes to determine which size you would like to make!

Skill level: beginner

Hook Size: (k)6.75mm(my favorite hooks)

Yarn: bernat velvet yarn(get some here)

***please not that if you’re using the Lion brand velvet yarn, the yarn weight is slightly smaller and will likely yield a smaller sized blanket than what you might have been thinking.

Depending on how tight you crochet you would need 2-3 balls of the larger bernat blanket yarn. Thanks for stopping by!

I used 3 skeins for this one but typically I use 4. If you have a thicker yarn you can usually get away with less! 🙂

If I choose to do an adult size blanket with this pattern, should I be ok as long as I start with any even number in my chain?

          Hi Laura!
Yes, just chain an even number for the length you desire and you should be good to go!

the pattern for the baby blanket could do double duty as a scarf. Of course, not as wide but the stitch is versatile. Thanks for sharing!

I want make a throw blanket for my couch, but with the chain do you work on the width or length. Would it’s be the width because of the type of pattern?

Yes, your chain count is the total width of your project! However, if you wanted the ridges to go in a different direction, you could make it with your chain count being the length of your project and then you continue to add yarn until you reach your desired width.

I’m a bit confused when you say go through the back loop. Am I reading too much into it? Ha Or is it just like normal going back into one of your chain loops?

No worries! When you’re looking at the top of your stitch you will see a “v”. The back loop would be farthest away from you. So instead of inserting your hook underneath both loops or the “v”. You would insert your hook into the back loop only. Does that make more sense? I hope I didn’t confuse you even more LOL!

I love this blanket and would love to try to crochet. Is this a good project for a beginner? I would like to make one for our bed that would be about twice as big as this one but I’m unsure how much yarn I would need (a lot!). You said you used 3 skiens on tgis blanket, how many yards per skien were they? Thank you!

      Hello, Gina!

This is a GREAT project for a beginner! Depending on your bed’s size you could easily use up to 12 skeins. Now, Bernat comes in the jumbo skeins now. You can usually find them at your local craft store. For a queen bed I would guesstimate approximately 12-18 skeins depending on how tightly you crochet. If you have any other questions or issues please let me know!

I’m a beginniner. What does the 35 mean with row 3. Row 3 confuses me even though it sounds so simple. Am I only doing SC but just going through back loop since it’s chunky? Thanks.

I used the largest ball of Bernat Blanket. But you could use their new velvet yarn too and it would be just as beautiful!
