I have been working as fast as my fingers would allow these last several weeks creating some really amazing pieces for you all!

Since we are right on the cusp of Spring I thought it only appropriate to design for you all an amazing piece which would transition you from cold Winter nights into windy Spring and cool Summer days.

This piece is named The ZaraTunic because Zara actually means transition. Fun huh?

Now, I had the incredible opportunity to make this garment using the lovely Lion Brand JEANS yarn! It was an absolute delight to work with. The texture is extremely soft and the color is simply stunning!

Hop over to LionBrand.com to pick out your favorite JEANs Yarn Wash

Let’s get Started!

Materials:

5.5MM Hook

Yarn – Lion Brand Jeans 6 skeins in the color BRAND NEW (L)

(4 – XS) (5 – S, M) (6 – XL) (7 – 2X ) (8 – 3X, 4X)

Scissors

Tapestry Needle

Stitch Marker

Gauge: 12 stitches x 6 rows  = 4 square inches

Dimensions:

appr. 29.5 inches wide X 30 inches long – Size Large

Abbreviations:

DC – double crochet

CH – chain

SC – single crochet

TR – treble crochet

Notes:

The shell stitch is worked as follows: Work 5 DC all in the same stitch

Pattern written in size L with sizes XS, S, M, XL, 2X, 3X, 4X indicated in ( ).

Pattern is worked from the bottom of the tunic up to the shoulder.

To customize this piece to your exact style/preference you will measure your bust, divide that number in half and add 5 inches. Then, you will create a base chain to achieve this custom width making sure to keep a multiple of 5 + 3.

For customizing the length, you will measure from your waist down appr. 11 inches. You will add a multiple of 4 rows to both your front and back panels to achieve your desired length.

Pattern Instructions

(Make 2 Panels)

CH – 103 (73, 83, 93, 113, 123, 133, 153)

Row 1 – DC in the 4th CH from the hook; *CH 2, skip 2 CHs, DC in each of the next 3 CHs; repeat from * across last 4 CHs, CH 2, skip 2 CHs, DC in each of last 2 CHs; CH 1. Turn

Row 2 – SC in first DC; * shell in next CH-2 space, skip next DC, SC in next DC, skip next DC; repeat from * across, ending last repeat with skip last DC, SC in top of turning CH; CH 4. Turn.

Row 4 – work 2 DC in base of CH; * skip next DC, SC in next DC **, skip next DC, shell in next CH-2 space; repeat from * across, ending last repeat at **; work 3 DC in top of turning CH; CH 3. Turn.

Row 5 – Skip first DC, DC in next DC, skip next DC; *CH 2, skip next DC of shell, DC in next 3 DC of shell, skip next DC of shell; repeat from * across, ending last repeat with CH 2, skip next DC, DC in next DC and in top of turning CH. CH 1. Turn.

Rows 6 – 49 (47, 49, 49, 53, 53, 57, 57): repeat rows 2 – 5

Row 50 (48, 50, 50, 54, 54, 58, 58) – SC all the way across. CH 1. Turn

Row 51 (49, 51, 51, 55, 55, 59, 59) – SC all the way across. CH 1. Turn

Tie off your ends and weave everything in.

SEAMING:

Lay your 2 panels together with both your front and back panels laying right sides together.

Seam the shoulders together leaving about 36 stitches between the shoulders to create an opening for your head.

For your armholes you will want to leave about 12- 18 inches open. Take your measuring tape and measure from the top down. Place a stitch marker here and do the same thing on the other side.

Take your tapestry needle and sew from your stitch maker down to the bottom of the garment. Do this on both sides. Tie off and weave in your ends.

Once you are done, flip your garment right side out and you are done!

You can most certainly use whichever yarn you would like 🙂
Some comparable yarns would be CARON simply soft or a larger size 3 yarn or smaller size 4. Let me know if you have any other questions!

    Hello!!!

I grew up crocheting from graphs and I am still learning to read the “american way”. Would you have the graph for this amazing pattern. Thank you SO VERY MUCH!

Hi! I love your pattern and am trying to make it as a Christmas present, but I’m having a little trouble with the gauge. It says 6 rows of 12 stitches. Does that mean to follow the pattern for the first 6 rows but only make it 12 stiches wide? I tried that and wound up with something wider than 4 inches. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi Molly, To make a gauge swatch you’ll want to crochet a chain of 5+3 (the pattern multiple) and you’ll want the chain to be longer than 4 inches. I would recommend chaining 23, then work the pattern for more than 6 rows (at least 8). You’ll end up with a gauge swatch that is larger than 4in x 4in, but within that swatch you will want to measure an 4 square inch area (2in x 2in) in several places on the swatch and within that area you should see 12 stitches and 6 rows. If you see more or less that that then you’ll need to adjust your hook size. Please join us in our Facebook group if you have any more questions.
