The Laine Puff Stitch Slouchy Beanie

It’s time for yet another great beanie pattern!

Today I am sharing with you this super textured, slouchy beanie. It uses a puff stitch and provides lots of character. I really love how the stitches pop in this particular yarn color.

This beanie was originally created in JoAnn’s Big Twist chunky yarn in the color Nugget which has since been discontinued.

The good news is that this pattern works up beautifully with Lion Brand’s new Color Made Easy and the great news is that not only do they have some gorgeous colors, but they also have one similar to this yellow called Tumeric!

TOOLS:

  • 1 skein size 5 yarn
  • 6.5mm (size K) Hook
  • scissors
  • tapestry needle

TERMS:

  • SC (single crochet)
  • DC (double crochet)
  • CH (chain)
  • SL ST (slip stitch)
  • PST (puff stitch)

PUFF STITCH INSTRUCTIONS:

YO; insert hook into specified stitch and draw up a loop to the height of the DC; *YO, insert hook into the same ST and draw up a loop to the height of the DC (repeat from * 2 times): YO and draw through all 9 loops on the hook: PST made

PATTERN NOTES:

This pattern is written in 2 sizes – child and adult. The instructions for the adult size are indicated in parenthesis ( ).

RIBBED BRIM:

CH 10

Row 1 – In the 3rd chain from the hook place a HDC. Continue with HDCs all the way across. CH 2. Turn.

Row 2 – 35 (37): HDC in the BACK LOOPS ONLY all the way across. CH 2. Turn.

Join the brim by bringing the short ends together and making a slip stitch across, Flip right side out and CH 1.

***From here we will be working in the round to create the body of the beanie.

BEANIE:

Rnd 1: 68 (64) SC all the way around. BE SURE to maintain a multiple of 4. SL ST to the top of the 1st SC in this round.

Rnd 2: CH 3 (counts as a DC), skip next ST, PST in the next ST, CH 1, skip next ST, *DC in next ST, CH 1, skip next ST, PST in the next ST, CH 1, skip next ST; Repeat from * around. SL ST to the 2nd CH of the CH 3 at the beginning of this round.

Rnd 3: CH 1 (counts as a SC), SC all the way around. SL ST to the top of the CH 1 at the beginning of this round.

Rnd 4 – 11: REPEAT rounds 2 & 3

Rnd 12 – 14: SC all the way around. SL ST to the top of the CH 1. Tie off after round 14 and leave a long tail.

CLOSING THE TOP:

Using your long tail you will weave in and out of the sts at the top of the beanie. You will then pull the top closed and sew together the remaining space. At this point, you could leave the beanie as-is or add a pom to the top!

Good morning, I am interested in trying this pattern. It has been at least 25 years since I even attempted to crochet so I am more than a bit rusty. You did a nice job of describing the terms that will be used. However, you left out what an HDC is and it’s the first thing you do after you make the chain. See Row #1. Could you please describe how to do and HDC? Thank you

      Hello, Beverly!
The HDC stands for half double crochet. It is worked as follows:
YO insert into stitch and draw up a loop. YO draw through all three loops on hook. It’s almost a DC but not quite. It’s basically the stitch between a SC and DC. Let me know if you need more help and I could make a quick stitch video for you!

Depending on your head size, it should work out to fit an adult. Thanks for stopping by Cindy!
