Hey there maker friends! Julie here. I hope you had a wonderful New Year’s! I spent the holiday relaxing with my husband and kiddos and watched some musical performances on TV. Oh, and of course, I crocheted!

Before the holiday’s, we were talking in the YHN stitch social Facebook group (link HERE) about creating a knit look poncho using crochet stitches.

Well, I swatched it out and posted a rudimentary pattern in that group and offered to write up a whole pattern if anyone was interested.

Can I just say… pattern writing is stinking hard work! LOL. But seriously, I thought that I could whip out this pattern in a week or two. HA!

I stuck with it though and through sheer determination (and massive amounts of coffee), I have finished writing this pattern. Whew!

Here it is! I hope you love it!

Knit Look Crochet Poncho

Skill Level: Easy

Tools and Materials:

  • 5.5mm (size I) Crochet Hook
  • Size 4 Yarn (Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn in Greymist is pictured), see pattern notes for quantities.
  • Yarn Needle
  • Scissors
  • Tape Measure

US Crochet Terms:

  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • crab stitch/reverse single crochet (click HERE for a video tutorial of this stitch)

Gauge: 16 sts x 11 rows = 4 inches x 4 inches

Pattern Notes:

Chains do not count as stitches.

Pattern written in five sizes: child size 2-4; child size 6-10; youth size 12-women’s size small; women’s size medium-xl; and women’s size 2xl-5xl. Variations in sizes given in parenthesis ( ).

Yarn quantities needed (in yards) are 320, 760, 1065, 2110, and 2710. Please note that these quantities are based on mathematical calculations so you will most likely end up with some leftover yarn, but should not end up short.

Finished sizes for each poncho panel:

  • child size 2-4, 7 inches x 14 inches
  • child size 6-10, 12 inches x 20 inches
  • youth size 12-women’s size small, 17 inches x 26 inches
  • women’s size medium-xl, 21 inches x 32 inches
  • women’s size 2xl-5xl, 24 inches x 36 inches

Finished sizes for collar (the .5 in the measurements below account for the crab stitch edging on the collar):

  • child size 2-4, 4.5 inches x 14 inches
  • child size 6-10, 5.5 inches x 16 inches
  • youth size 12-women’s size small, 6.5 inches x 18 inches
  • women’s size medium-xl, 7.5 inches x 22 inches
  • women’s size 2xl-5xl, 8.5 inches x 24 inches

Knit Look Crochet Poncho Pattern

Poncho (make 2 panels)

Ch (29, 49, 69, 85, 97)

R1. hdc in 2nd ch from the hook, hdc across, ch1, turn

R2. hdc in the 3rd loop of each st across (the third loop – sometimes called the horizontal bar – will be facing you after you turn, see photos below), ch 1, turn

R3-(39, 55, 72, 88, 99). repeat R2

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Seaming Poncho Panels Together
Since this stitch pattern is reversible either side can be considered the inside. However, whatever seaming method you choose to use to seam the panels together will affect which side will be considered the inside. This comes into play when attaching the collar.

Lay the 2 poncho panels perpendicular to each other, one on top of the other so that the corner and edges line up as in this graphic.

Fold the panel on the bottom up and over to meet the edge of the panel on the top and seam together as indicated by the dotted line in this graphic.

Fold the panel on the top down and under to meet the edge of the panel on the bottom and seam together as indicated by the dotted line in this graphic. Flip work over for easier seaming.

Collar

Ch (17, 21, 25, 29, 33)

R1. hdc in 2nd ch from the hook, hdc across, ch 1, turn

R2. hdc in the 3rd loop of each st across (the third loop – sometimes called the horizontal bar – will be facing you after you turn), ch 1, turn

R3-(39, 44, 50, 61, 66). repeat R2

Fold short ends together and sl st across to seam closed forming a tube.

Turn collar right side out, ch1, sc around.

Crab stitch (reverse single crochet) around (into the row of sc you just worked).

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Attaching Collar To Poncho

Seam the collar to the head hole opening on the poncho taking care to ensure the poncho and collar are seamed together with the correct sides out. I found that holding the poncho right side out and holding the collar folded down turtle neck style gave me a better visual of how to seam it.

Maker Tip: use stitch markers to hold the collar in place on the neck opening while seaming to prevent the fabric from stretching while seaming and bunching at the end of the seam.

Attaching Fringe

For each fringe, cut enough 4-inch to 8-inch lengths of yarn to go around the entire bottom edge of the poncho (I would recommend shorter fringe for smaller sized ponchos).

Hold a strand together folded in half to form a small loop at the fold.  Use the crochet hook to pull the loop through the bottom edge of the poncho from the front side to the back side.  Then, still using the hook, pull the fringe ends through the loop and pull on them to tighten. Add fringe all along the bottom edge of the poncho.  Trim fringe to even, if needed.

Hi – just to clarify, what kind of stitches are you supposed to do in R3? It doesn’t specify, just has the number in parentheses. Thank you!
