***UPDATE: I remade this sweater with an acrylic yarn and I believe it holds up a lot better than the scarfie yarn. It also washes better too.

For those of you who are just crocheters then you will love how simple, easy this pattern is to create and customize! One of my goals when designing is to create luxury patterns which can EASILY be customized even if you have never made garments before.
At the beginning of the summer, I started down the garment design path with my TWIGGY TUNIC PATTERN (HERE)

As you can tell, simplicity in luxury is my game and I absolutely love creating pieces like these for my readers! With that being said, let’s dive right into the simplest pullover sweater you’ll ever make!
~Materials
worsted weight yarn (Big Twist Value in Gold, pictured), 900-1000 yards depending on size
~Abbreviations (U.S. Terms)
SC (single crochet)
DC (double crochet)
STS (stitches)
CH (chain)
~Gauge
10 rows X 6 (SC, CH1, DC) stitch combos = 4 inches
~Pattern Notes
This pattern is written for a size L. I will place the other sizes as follows in the instructions (S, M, XL).
Bust size is 32-34 inches for Small, 36-38 inches for Medium, 40-42 inches for Large, 44-46 inches for Extra Large. Sizing based on Women’s Standard Size chart from Craft Yarn Council.
If you are wanting to size down, please measure the bust area and make your foundation chain the length needed while maintaining a multiple of 3. If you have more questions please email me and I will do my best to assist you!
CROCHET PATTERN:
(make 2 panels; front & back)
CH 78 (69, 72, 84) ***see patterns notes to learn how to customize even more!
R1 – SC in the 3rd CH from the hook. * Work (SC, CH 1, DC) into the next stitch. Skip next 2 sts. Rep from * all the way across ending with a SC in the last stitch. CH 2. Turn
R2 – Skip the first 2 sts. *Work (SC, CH1, DC) into the CH 1 space of the previous row. Skip next 2 sts. Rep from * all the way across ending with a SC in the last stitch. CH 2. Turn
R3 – 63: repeat row 2 all the way across
***add or subtract as many rows as you would like to make the sweater the length you desire. Make sure to add the same number to both panels.
SLEEVES
(make 2 sleeves; left & right)
CH 48 (39, 48, 54) ***You can easily adjust the tightness of your sleeve by adding chains or taking them away. Just be sure to maintain a multiple of 3!
R1 – SC in the 3rd CH from the hook. * Work (SC, CH 1, DC) into the next stitch. Skip next 2 sts. Rep from * all the way across ending with a SC in the last stitch. CH 2. Turn
R2 – Skip the first 2 sts. *Work (SC, CH1, DC) into the CH 1 space of the previous row. Skip next 2 sts. Rep from * all the way across ending with a SC in the last stitch. CH 2. Turn
R3 – 52 : repeat row 2 all the way across
***add or subtract as many rows as you would like to make the sleeves the length you desire. Make sure to add the same number to both panels.
SEAMING TOGETHER:
HEAD HOLE: Lay both panels down with right sides together. Starting from the shoulder, you will sew the top closed as many inches as you need to create your first “shoulder” area. Do this on both sides. Be sure to try it on making sure you can easily get your head in and out BEFORE you weave in your ends.
ATTACHING THE TOP OF THE SLEEVES: Lay the sewn together panels out. Then, take one of your sleeves and line up the top of the sleeve with your shoulder seam. You want the sleeve to be as centered with the shoulder seam as possible.
Sew both of your sleeves on.
SEAMING UP THE SIDES: You will now fold your garment as though it is inside out. Starting from the cuff of the sleeve you will sew all the way down to the waistband.
Weave in all of your ends, turn right side out and wear!

I have a question. When you say repeat from the * to end of row do I include “skip next two stitches” in that repeat? Do I repeat only what is included in the parentheses- the sc, chain 1, dc or do I repeat by doing this: sc, ch 1, dc, skip next two stitches?

I’ve got about 1/3 or more of one of the body pieces done. Is there any reason why I shouldn’t keep going & do the body in one piece excepting leaving an area for the neck? I’m ok either way – just wondered. I’m using a self-striping yarn, so this would also let me control color matches better (just thought of that!) – Any suggestions welcome! 🙂
You are incredible!!! I’d say that would totally work! In fact, that’s the way I did my other Tunic I made over the summer. I think that’s a great option 🙂

Hi – one other thing. I just see you made yours in Scarfie Yarn which is a 5 weight. Did you use an I hook with that yarn or is I the recommended size for using 4 wt. ? This is about the 5th sweater I’ve tried & I want this one to work!!! Thanks very much!

I’m making a size large sweater and it currently measures 32 inches long. I am only up to row 38. Is this the correct gauge? Should I still continue to get 63? It seems very long. Thank you for your response.

I based it on my own size. Im 5’4″ with a 38C bust. Please feel free to adjust as necessary to fit it exactly to yourself. All you need to do is maintain your multiple and you shouldn’t have a problem! Hope this helps! 🙂
PS I’ve also added the gauge to my pattern.
I’ve always made the body first then crochet sleeves when the body was done but I think this method might help me make full sleeves instead of short ones LOL! I get halfway then give up ;/

Is the measurement centimeters or inches? What size would I need for a 43 inch bust and 39 inch waist, allowing for the ease?
They are in inches. I have added the gauge to the pattern. If you take your bust size and round up to 44in. Create a foundation CH (maintaining your multiple) the length of 22in. You will then create your panels with as many rows as you want so as to make your top as long or short as you desire. You will create 2 identical panels for this piece. I hope this helps!

It’s beautiful. I have a bunch of red heart yarn. How does that compare to what you made your sweater in? … and mine is 4 ply. What size hook would you suggest?
I’m currently working this up in big twist acrylic yarn which I believe is comparable to red heart acrylic yarn. I’m using the size in the pattern but maybe for you do the suggested hook size with the yarn. I’d also try working a small swatch with the pattern hook and the yarn recommended hook. Just measure your bust and keep your multiple and you should easily be able to size it up. I have also added in the gauge to the pattern!
Hi! I recently found your pattern, and my mom and I are both working on this sweater together. I tend to have issues reading patterns, and I’ve restarted my side of the body 4 times already. Is this sweater suppose to increase? Every time I work R1, that side has continued to increase while the other goes straight up. Am I supposed to SC, skip 2, and then SC,Ch 1, DC? Because I think not skipping two before the pattern is definitely increasing it.
I see the pattern is written for ‘L’ but I cannot find any reference for size L. Can you provide some measurement of L to help gauge the right size I need. Thanks
I’ve added the gauge to the pattern. I’ve based the design on my size. I’m 5’4″ with a 38C bust. My torso is a bit longer than most. In order to get it to fit exactly how you want, take your gauge into consideration as well as your multiple and you shouldn’t have a problem!

Beautiful sweater! I’ve been crocheting for about 3 yrs now (self taught) & am tiring of making hats, scarves & dishcloths. I would love to make an article of clothing! Depending on how tight you hold your work when crocheting you will need about 3-4 skeins of the scarfie yarn.
What are the bust sizes for L and XL please? Seems my sweaters always turn out small!

I love, love, love your pattern. I am using Red Heart Super Saver Aaron speckled yarn and I hope it turns out as nicely as your pictures. I have difficulty counting the road I have done. What are the measurements from top neckline to bottom? I am also 5 ‘ 4″ .
Hi! I love this pattern and am just starting it out with a beautiful new yarn I got but I’m having a problem with the beginning. You say to SC in the 3rd chain from hook then work the (SC, CH 1, DC) in the next chain. Then skip 2 chains and work the (SC, CH 1, DC) again and repeat and put SC in the last chain but when I do that I end up with 2 chains at the end. Am I supposed to work SC in 3rd chain from hook and then skip 2 chains and work the (SC, CH 1, DC)? Please help! I definitely started with 78 chains too just FYI.

I’m making this jumper for my mum, so i cant ask her to try it on whenever i need to double check sizing.. I got about half way through the front panel and I think it’s a little bit small. Would I still be able to just add some extra stitches on the back panel to make it bigger, or do I have to start again? I don’t want it to look a bit weird having extra stitches on the back.
The neck hole would end up having more stitches at the back than the front so it’ll still line up, I just don’t want to finish it then realise I have to do that one again
Ahhj sweet pattern! Just finished of course if i wasn’t procrastinating i could have finished it earlier. Pattern is easy. I have to adjust the sleeves next time i made it too big but who cares, I’m the one wearing it.

Hi! I would recommend making a swatch first and then seeing what your gauge is to make sure you aren’t too big or too small.
I will need to make this sweater in a cotton yarn suc as ” I Love This Cotton” from Hobby Lobby. It is a 4 ply worsted weight. Are there any adjustments I need to make?

Hi Sharon, As long as you can reasonably achieve the gauge, then you should have no issues. If the cotton yarn you select ends up being thinner than the Big Twist yarn used in this project and it doesn’t allow you to achieve the gauge without losing the integrity of the design, then you should be able to still achieve the look by keeping a multiple of 3. What I like to do is take a top out of my closet that has a fit that I like, lay it flat on the floor or bed, and place my project on top of it to check if the size is lining up. Hope this info helps. Please let me know if you have any other questions and I’ll do my best to help.
Question? So end with single crochet does that mean just a single crochet? Or does that mean end with the single crochet plus the rest of the pattern sequence? ie:SC, CH1, DC?

I believe it’s been discontinued, but you may be able to find some for sale on Ravelry, Etsy, Ebay, Amazon, or in a Facebook stash busting group. Another option would be the Big Twist Rainbow in yellow. It’s a little brighter than the gold, but still quite beautiful.

I find that the most common thing that causes this to happen is identifying the first stitch after you turn. The turning chain at the end of the row always counts as the first stitch in the next row (unless a specific pattern says chains are not counted as stitches). So when you turn, then chain is “coming out of the first stitch”.
