I haven’t used many pompoms lately so I thought we were due for a fun pattern using these lovely embellishments!
This is a smaller cowl which would allow you to wear it well into the spring season. Plus the pompoms make it irresistible for accessorizing with just about any outfit!
WHAT I USED:
- 10mm Hook
- 2 contrasting chunky yarns
- scissors
- pompom maker
- tapestry needle
Using your main color choice you will start by CH 46, then you will SL ST to the first CH to create a large circle.
We will be working in the round for this pattern so make sure you haven’t allowed your foundation chain to twist.
Rnd 1 – CH 2, HDC in every ST all the way around and ending with a SL ST to the CH 2
Rnd 2 – CH 2, HDC in the horizontal loop under the main ST. Continue with the HDC in this specific loop all the way around. SL ST to the CH 2.
Rnd 3 – CH 2, *HDC in back loop, HDC in front loop. Repeat from * all the way around and SL ST to the top of CH 2
Rnd 4 – CH 2, * HDC in front loop, HDC in back loop. Repeat from * all the way around and SL ST to the top of CH 2
**repeat rounds 3 & 4 for Rnds 5-10
SWITCH COLORS
Rnd 11 – CH 2, HDC in all stitches, SL ST to top of CH 2
Rnd 12 – CH 2, HDC in the horizontal loop under the main ST. Continue with the HDC in this specific loop all the way around. SL ST to the CH 2.
***you will start to see a “flap” appear on your project and this is what you want!
Rnd 13 – CH 1, SC in all the STS, SL ST to the top of Ch 1, tie off and weave in ends.
Now you will make the pompoms!
I used the XL pompom maker but you can use a smaller one if you so desire! I will say you want to make sure you leave an extra long tail to give yourself plenty of yarn to attach these cuties to the cowl.
You will simply tie your pompoms in the center front of the cowl. I would suggest attaching them at different lengths. You can then weave in the ends of the poms and they will help to weigh down the “collar” of the cowl.
Like I stated in the beginning, this isn’t a big chunky cowl, as far as being tall and able to act as a hood. This is more of a neck warmer which can be worn when the weather isn’t too frigid and cold.
I suppose if you can’t resist you could wear it with your big marshmallow coat!
If you make one of these cowls for yourself, I would love to see it!

I would love to see you stylin in this adorable knitwear piece!
Oh yes, and one more thing before I go, you can easily adjust this pattern to be fitted to a child by simply chaining less in the beginning. After that, you would continue with the same pattern!
