I shared in my newsletter over the weekend how we have a Christmas banquet to attend this weekend. I had already planned to make my girl’s dresses but I knew I wanted to add some sort of an accessory to their hair. This turned into my 2yr old demanding he needed a bow tie and then my oldest son making a second to that request!
It turned into a bigger project, which is not a problem, and thus I created this post as a result! A win, win right?? 🙂
I wanted to make a simple yet beautiful crochet flower headband. I made a popcorn flower a while back for a hat I had made for my daughter’s birthday. So I wanted to try out a new flower style!
Being a Christmas banquet and a time to get dressed up and fancy, my girls and I browsed through the patterns on Pinterest and discovered a lovely, fluffy crochet rose! Using a thick elastic I created a headband and used felt backing to attach the flower and elastic together.
When I was finished with the first crochet rose I was in awe of how big the rose was! It’s definitely a statement piece. I think they will be a great accessory to the dresses my girls will be wearing. I really love the boho look and I think this style is easy to dress up or dress down.

The designer of this pattern even made this rose with the option to go fluffier and bigger! I think on a chunky hat or ear warmer this would be adorable! You could even embellish a knitted or crochet sweater with it (if placed in the right spot). It would look cute as a single bow on an alligator clip or added onto a bag.
The possibilities are endless!
I decided to use a thicker width elastic to help compensate for the jumbo size of the rose. I then sewed together the ends of the elastic using a zigzag stitch. I then folded the ends down and sewed them as well.
Using a black piece of felt I layered this all together with hot glue.

I really love how they turned out. They are absolutely lovely! Of course, we had to do a mini photo shoot modeling the headbands 🙂
I love how each of their personalities is captured here!

Now for the knitted bow ties!
I have an 8yr old, 2yr old and a 10.5 mos old. I had a few size variations to cover with this so I have 3 size options available for you.
WHAT I USED:
- Yarn in desired color
- size 9 knitting needles
- scissors
- tapestry needle
- hot glue gun
- glue stick
- felt
PATTERNS:
Kids Size:
Cast on 18
R1 – 11 : Knit all the way across
Bind off, tie off and weave in ends. Then taking a separate yarn string tie the center of the bow and then proceed to wrap the ends around the bow in opposite directions. Tie off securely and then trim the ends. Using a small piece of felt you will repeat a similar process for attaching to elastic. You want to make sure and keep your felt pieces small enough so they aren’t poking out the front side of the bow.
