Looking for the perfect crochet blanket pattern for beginners? Then you’ve found the right post! Today’s crochet pattern is soooo easy and features one of my favorite borders, the crochet faux ribbing border.
One of the reasons I love this style of border is for its crisp, professional finish. Especially if you are gifting the blanket or perhaps you sell them online you will love using this border method for the best results!
To begin we are going to need to gather together a few materials:
***please note the dimensions for this size are different than the 6 sizes available for purchase in the PDF pattern on Etsy***
For this size (DIMENSIONS: Blanket body – appr. 40″x56″ + Added Border – appr. 7″ = full-width & height: 47″ x 63″ appr. finished measurements of the blanket pictured)
I used 3 colors of Bernat blanket yarn; one ball per color.
You do not have to use the same colors as I did because YOU are the creator and have the freedom to dream up your most loved combination. If you’re a neutrals lover, then by all means make a solid color blanket in your favorite taupe hue!
Bernat blanket yarns are fabulous because there are SOOOOO many colors to choose from. It will be hard not being able to find a shade you absolutely love.
MATERIALS YOU NEED FOR THIS CROCHET BLANKET PATTERN:
3-4 Balls Bernat Blanket Yarn in colors of your choice.
MY COLORS:
- Coral Blossom (in the baby Bernat Blanket yarn)
- White
- Mini Succulents (in the baby Bernat Blanket yarn)
Hook Size 12MM
Scissors
Tapestry Needle
HOW TO MAKE SURE YOU MAKE THIS SIZE EXACTLY:
If you want to ensure you make the exact size I made for today’s pattern post you will want to ensure you are painting the correct gauge.
The GAUGE is: 1.5sts X 1.5rows = 1″ squared
Not sure what gauge is? I’ve created a simple to understand video explaining all the details:
A few more pointers to make sure you are able to make this blanket with no issues:
If you happen to crochet tight or for those who are brand new, if you happen to hold your hook tight, you might ought to go up one full hook size:

If you are someone who is more loose in the way you hold your hook you may want to go down a hook size or even two if you are really loose.
These are just a few ways you can make sure your blanket isn’t too big or too small!
TERMS USED:
- SCYU – single crochet with a yarn under
- ST – stitch
- CH– chain
As I stated at the beginning, this is really for a beginner but the beautiful simplicity can entice even the most novice of makers to give it a try!
HOW TO MAKE THE JANUARY CROCHET BLANKET FOR BEGINNERS:
CH 61
Row 1 – In the second CH from the hook place a SCYU (begin by making a standard SC but instead of doing a YO you will wrap the yarn under; see video for more visual instructions). Continue with SCYUs in each stitch all the way across. Turn.
Row 2 – CH 1 (counts as a SCYU) Place one SCYU in each stitch all the way across. Turn
Row 3 – Row 26: repeat row 2

Row 27 – 28: repeat row 2

Row 29 – 54: repeat row 2

Row 55 – 56: repeat row 2
CHANGE COLORS (optional)
Row 57 – 84: repeat row 2; tie off and leave a long enough tail to weave indoor ends.
ADDING A Beginner BORDER (optional)
If you are brand new to crochet I think this beginner border is the perfect solution for practicing those basic stitching skills.
I want you to get good at creating nice, crisp edges and I believe one way to do that is by adding simple borders to blanket projects like this one!
To begin you will want to start in the middle of your top row. Simply insert your hook into any stitch and attach your border color yarn.
All you are going to do is place a SCYU in each stitch (except the corners where you will put 3 SCYU all into one stitch space) and then slip stitch back to the first stitch.
This is really simple and easy and best of all, you get a nice, clean looking blanket edge!

I love the faux crochet border! I couldn’t find the link on YouTube. Are there directions somewhere?

I’ve been crocheting since age 18; now 74 years young. I consider myself “lost in Crochet.” You can imagine I’ve watched a “few” videos and read a few patterns over the years. But you are a very GOOD teacher of crochet. You are clear and not wordy and all about crochet and not your personal life; the way it should be. No I didn’t need to learn how to do a SC or a slip knot, but I forwarded to where I needed to be. Thank you very much for this pattern. My little grand kiddos have a have of sticking their little toes thru the holes and this Bernat Baby Blanket pattern is virtually hopeless and I can’t wait to give it to little Ava Joy. God Bless and keep teaching.

What is the difference between doing the single crochet from the yarn from the back as opposed to hooking from the front? Does it result in the same thing? I’m trying to understand why this stitch is easier than the normal single crochet.

Where is pattern for the advanced borde
Irene
hello, was wondering how I can view the part 2 video for the border? I saw no link to a part 2 when I viewed the part 1 video. I would love to go beyond the simple border covered in part 1 video. Thank you.

This does not look like a 12mm hook that is being used. More like an 8mm
