I have been wanting to design a handbag pattern for a while. I was doing a ton of research and gathering as much inspiration as I could before I landed on this particular design.
I know I wanted some sort of striped pattern and a closure which would be more of a statement. When I discovered these brass buttons at JoAnn’s I fell in love and knew exactly what I wanted to create.
Today’s project is made using some gorgeous Red Heart Yarn from the LOVE line. This acrylic yarn is so soft and inexpensive plus this particular line has some pretty amazing colors! For this project, I used the colors, BLACK and ICED AQUA
I used the Boysenberry color to create the amazing Crochet Fringe Scarf which I shared last week!
The tools you will need are simple:
- 2 contrasting colors skeins
- size G hook
- tapestry needle
- 2 buttons (med size)
- scissors
Moss Stitch Video Tutorial:
The stitch used is the moss stitch which works up like this:
“SC, CH 1 and skip next ST, SC, CH 1 and skip next ST (this repeats for the entire row) then you CH 1 and turn. SC in CH1 space, CH 1 and skip next ST, SC in CH 1 space, CH 1 and skip next ST”
You’re basically working in the “windows” and just creating a simple back and forth weave look.
The only variations are how many to chain and then creating the buttonholes.
Start by chaining 52 with your starter color
ROW 1 – SC in 2nd Ch from the hook, CH 1 and skip next ST, * SC in next ST, CH 1 and skip next ST. Repeat from * all the way across; CH 1, turn
ROW 2 – *SC in CH 1 space, CH 1 and skip next ST. Repeat from * all the way across (you will SC in last ST) Ch 1, turn
Row 3 – (the button hole row) SC in CH 1 space, CH 1 and skip next ST, SC in next CH 1 space, CH 4 while skipping 4 STS. * SC in next ST, CH 1 and skip next ST. Repeat from * until the last 8 STS. Here you will create the other button hole by CH 4 and skipping 4 STS then continue with the moss stitch (SC, CH 1 skip next ST) repeat.
***each color is worked in 6 rows. At the end of every 6th row, you will color change. For this bag, I did a total of 8 stripes. Then with right sides together I seamed up the sides. Wove in the ends and then closed the flap to measure where my buttons needed to be sewn on.
Some other ideas would be to add a zipper or a fabric liner. I’m thinking of some other handbags in the future where I will be implementing these types of options.
However, for this design, I wanted to keep it simple, yet elegant and I believe this was captured!
